Enjoying Marbella, restaurant by restaurant…

Zumaque Elviria

As we live very close by to Zumaque, we were just waiting for a suitable occasion to celebrate. It’s been open for around 12 months and we were excited to find out how it has achieved such top ratings. Located very close to the main coast road, it’s warm and comfortably decorated. Sadly as it was a Monday night in cold, wet and windy December, we were the only guests. That did mean that the service provided by the Owner Benito was extra special.

The Yum: The menu is small (during busier seasons, there are specials and taster menus) but we each managed to find something special. To get us started was Amuse Bouche of warm Pumpkin puree accompanied by a delicious rich oxtail croquette. Starter of carpaccio of Gambon, flavoured with citrussy gels and served with homemade sourdough bread. The olive oil comes from the finca owned by the owners family and was delicious. The mussels in anis were tiny, sweet and exquisite. Seafood soup was finished at the table and the bisque flavour was exemplary. Main courses were chicken, beef cheek and corvina. They were presented in a simple way but each dish packed a punch in flavour. We ordered desserts (see the photos) and a cheese plate too and there were exquisite petits fours given to us also.

The Fizz: The wines were definitely the highlight of the evening. Benito is a Sommelier and this is where he shines. We began with a Solera reserva manzanilla, passed through a white moscatel from Sierras de Malaga, on to a red Garnacha Syrah from Ronda and finished up with a variety of sweet wines with dessert. All were presented in beautiful crystal and in great detail.

The Rest: Booking online was easy and efficient via google. For a small local establishment, the price (we paid eur100/head for full pairing) and small menu means that it will only be for special occasions. However it’s worth every penny as it’s a stylish experience rather than ‘just a meal’.  We will definitely return, perhaps in the summer to enjoy their terrace.
